Business Owner Surveys – Impacts of COVID-19 on Chinatown Business

Program

August 2025

This summer, we hosted two PhD student researchers, Jiangnan Liu and Jiahao Zhang, who specializes in Sociology at University at Albany to lead a research endeavor exploring the impacts of COVID 19 and beyond on Chinatown businesses and business owners. This research is funded by the Mary Li Hsu Charitable Trust and supervised by Professor Zai Liang from University at Albany. Our SYEP interns were able to join them and conducted business owner surveys and interviews over the summer.

“Even though doing surveys is very tiring but every time I did it, I was proud of myself,” said one of our SYEP interns, Xiaojun. This ongoing research endeavor will not only help us to understand how local businesses handle challenges but also eventually how culturally and linguistically diverse our community is. More in-depth insights will be available at our website and social media in the fall. Read more about the project here: https://www.worldjournal.com/wj/story/121390/8875400
